... at the morphologies that at first glance appear so completely different to anything that lives today, reaches the heart of Walde's inv estigations into the process of development.
It is almost as if the "Hallucigenia" are already superior to mankind because their bodies provided with tentacles on all sides are capable of taking in everything simultaneously, whereas the human instruments of perception mind and bodv, intelligence and emotion
concentrate on clearly defined territories to assure better order and functionality.

Tie or Untie   follow me to the rightAs an inventor, Martin Walde is a researcher and a poet who condenses in abstracting forms and narrative ciphers phenomena that evade or oppose any attempt trying to organise reason and/or functional rationality. Not unlike functional objects, the Handmates, Woobies, and even more so the NOFFs are appealing because then seem to function; they confuse us when we pick them up through their superior efficiency at developing creative obsessions by comparison to the rationality in science and the everyday world. It is conceivable that the exchange of energy helping the Enactments to their plausibility outside the mania for normality and functionality happens between the Handmates and the Hallucigenia. It is a little like the incomplete barter around The Teaset of 1996 which Walde
again hopes to successfully conclude in a new appearance in the Taxispalais. On the table, we still find the letter in which Walde along with information on his e-mail address offers a tea set, unused for the last 100 years and the horror story attached to it, only known to the artist. It is displayed in exchange for a similar package made of a personal object and its hidden history.

Clips of Slips   follow me to the rightIn an arsenal of form transitory processes and scattered movements are thus reduced leading into a self-reproducing cosmos continually expanding on invisible platforms. The line offers the possibilities of insinuation, limitation and transgression; the colour and material give us a physical presence for touching and investigating. It is a common phenomenon for objects to be concealed in trouser's-pockets and touched in physical or psychological distress; for they seem to convey if not orientation, perhaps some familiarity and intimacy. In this context, Walde recalls the first prototype of his Handmates, which he always carried about. Like a puppy, it invited to be patted. The Handmates is a charm which function is primarily, it seems, to soothe the body in order to turn the mind - permanently looking for the significant towards the possible existence within the indeterminable sphere of a reality constantly mutating between solid and liquid forms.
